Gandalf is a wizard. He is the one that asked Bilbo Baggins to go on an adventure with him. Even though Bilbo refused, Ganalf left a mark on his door, and that night Bilbo received some unexpexted guests.

     Gandalf helped Thorin recruite  Bilbo to venture to the Lonely Mountain.
